  • I’d Love to Change the World

I’d Love to Change the World

But I don’t Know What to Do.

It is difficult not to lament the dismal state of political and civic leadership in the world. But should we be disappointed?

Those who have the courage of their convictions are, for the most part, emboldened by beliefs anchored to the shallow crust that is their worldview.

Those who dig deeper to find a more solid foundation, promised by the few who claim to have found it, end up quarrying through the same sediments their peers and predecessors plumbed; their excavations invariably expiring with them before bedrock is found.

Mine long enough and you may conclude that “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing” as did Socrates and many others.

“I want to change the world

But I don’t know what to do

So I leave it up to you….”

Skeptics are not known for inspiring the body politic. Campaigns need content. Voters want to know where you stand on important policies or, in skeptical terms, how devoted you are to their prejudices.

The body politic not only demands decisive leadership, it insists on those decisions being grounded in truth; their Truth. Explaining that you will make the best possible choice based on the information you then believe is true mixed in with gut feeling as a platform doesn’t inspire confidence in voters.

There was a time when the number of Truths in dispute in any given community was manageable. Today, with everywhere and everyone viewable on a mobile screen and more fully experienced just a jet flight away, there are too many ways of being with which to contend.

The number of data points available for analytic decision making has exploded beyond our capacity to process them. While we are comfortable allowing AI algorithms to successfully assess these data point to predictively diagnose cancer, will it ever come to pass that these algorithms select the leaders among us?

    Unlikely.

We are a species that has ushered in an Age that is far more advanced than our wetware. Not because we have created computers that can beat us at Go or Chess, but because we have accelerated the rate of change beyond the terminal velocity of our biology.

Our brain is processing inputs that its natural peripherals (sensory organs) cannot capture without the aid of technology. The brain certainly had room for growth, but there is a difference between processing a black flag on a ship seen through a looking glass and looking back in time to 900 million years after the big bang through the James Webb Space Telescope.

In the same way that our other organs are struggling to keep pace with the changes we have made to our environments and food, our brains are struggling to make sense of the deluge of diverse information we have generated.

In some ways, the rise of jingoism so quickly after the 21st century’s rapid globalism can be seen as an overreaction to this diversity. Many of us want to reflexively return to the comfort of the native and familiar; to our pastoral mythologies.

Even those who command the world’s resources have created a convergence in their material consumption to allay the anxiety arising from their rapid deployment everywhere. I can be in New York, London, Paris, Dubai, Singapore and Tokyo and visit Berluti, eat at LPM or Hakkasan and stay at the Four Seasons. Luxury has been franchised to ensure the elite’s access to quality. In the same way that you can count on a Big-Mac, you can now count on yellowtail in yuzu soy, anywhere your Gulfstream takes you.

And that’s the point – until humanity acknowledges that we have created a complex world that we are incapable of navigating without extra-human assistance, humility and benevolence, we will continue to rely on simple mythologies to see our way forward (MAGA/Michelin Stars/Louis Vuitton) because we do not know what else to do.

Seeing how we are dealing with things today, that extra-human assistance will continue to be theological, arrogance will continue to trump humility and mean self-interest will continue to override benevolence.

    Microfractures that Kill

The word LINGCHI in overlapping red, yellow, black and blue letters
    Death by a thousand cuts.

    I.

Your stomach growls as you carry in your groceries
And unknowingly step in shit tracking it across your floor
When the smell registers you look back and see your prints
And a bag tears open evacuating its load
Glass shatters and your floor is now slick
Glazed with extra virgin olive oil that prompted your trip to the store
Blood pressure rising and expletives flow
Dogs rush in to greet you deaf to your screaming
    No
Now running in fear from you, their paws drenched in oil
No good options available to you and the next several steps just make things worse
Then the swelling rage at the time taken from what’s left
For wiping and cleaning as cortisol careens through your extents
Quieting hunger and turning the floor over to despair

    II.

Everyone is waiting and you’re obliged to go
Messages ding asking you to bring something from home
Tires are soft so you put the bag down and grab the pump
Finger bones bang into spokes as you try to uncap the valve
The Brompton rocks on its rear rack’s upgraded rolling wheels
You try to steady things but the skull shaped cap is stuck
So the front wheel twists and the bike goes to fall
Now the cap’s off but the pump head isn’t taking the valve
Your finger bones fight the spokes as you try to couple head to threads
All the air has gone out the tube and your phone dings
Head pops off the hose and it’s a rough break
Pump takes flight as you let go at the end of an anger-powered swing
Adrenal glands in overdrive as you look for your other pump
Change this head to Schrader and take another turn
Fingers close to bleeding when you think you’ve gotten it done
But pumped air doesn’t seem to be swelling the tube
Too desperate to kneel down and try to get a better seal
Quicker thrusts don’t a god damn difference make
Back on your knees prostrate and you hear a hiss
Valve and tube have cleaved apart
Another year taken off the end

  • Truth as Pattern

    Truth as Pattern

The progeny of God’s beloved father of the multitudes, אברהם אבינו, gave us Moses, Jesus and Mohammed according to the dogma of their respective religions; altogether known as the Abrahamic religions.

Abraham is the direct descendant of Shem who was one of the 3 offspring of Noah. No one who lived since or is alive today isn’t directly descended from one of these three lines as all of antediluvian humanity was wiped out by the great flood save Noah, his sons and their wives.

Shem’s brothers, Ham and Japeth are responsible for all the people of this earth except the S(h)emites who generally multiplied between the Nile and the Euphrates.

The region in the red circle.

In other words, the three religions that today occupy more territory on this planet than any other religion individually or collectively all grew out of a tiny crescent and were established by or caused to be established by a narrow lineage in a Semitic language.

To be sure, from a population perspective, Jews, Christians and Muslims account for only 50% of humanity. But that inconsisitency is due to the numerosity of the Chinese and Indians and their religions’ disinterest in conversion.

Judaism isn’t interested in conversion either and their adherents’ numbers reflect that. Christians and Muslims on the other hand, well, “Do you have a few minutes to talk about the Lord?”

I would wager that we’re living in a period of time when conversion rates are fairly stagnant across the board. Most conversions occurred during the Middle Ages and in periods when indigenous populations were colonized.

As most people inherit their religious affiliations there is strong momentum that would have to be opposed to witness contractions in membership. The growing number of Muslims in the world is consistent with Muslim population growth. Miss that and you’re inclined to think there’s something else at play there – Taliban really winning infidels over with their charm and finesse.

There is a sense that newer generations are generally less observant than previous generations. Given the pace of technological advancement, membership numbers will eventually dwindle and go the way of pagan systems if Humanity doesn’t wipe itself out first or AI exterminates us; both highly likely outcomes.

So how do we make sense of where we are today along this arc?

The majority of members are comfortable attributing the ascendancy of Abraham’s legacy to its being the Truth; more precisely, the Truth revealed to us by The Creator. The majority are not sufficiently concerned with the details or uncomfortable with the circular logic underpinning their beliefs. They have made the lowest risk choice and are getting on with it.

Ironically, it is a majority that has the most tenuous relationship with its religion and God that creates the momentum and legitimacy that elevates their system of beliefs from esoteric cult status.

This is by necessity a dialectic relationship. The religion must have profound, gnostic and esoteric qualities to be the real deal but in order for these to be expounded, dissected, and compounded across generations, there must be sufficient interest from a large enough population to produce people who are capable of and willing to do the work. In order for there to be sufficient interest, the Faith has to be watered down for mass consumption.

Otherwise you’re shelved next to New Age or Zoroastrianism.

Heirs to the Big 3 who tangle with the questions that arise from their interactions with these “traditions” end up on the fence or on either side of it.

Contrary to what we’ve been told, there is nothing special about this particular question outside of the threatened outcome if you answer it wrong. Just like any indeterminate query, people choose Yes, No or Not Sure.

That choice depends on the context within which each of us is evaluating that choice.

For the most part, that context is accidentally formed. More importantly, it is something over which we exercise little control or agency.

GMT is point 0 for time zones and the world map is regularly drawn with Europe, the “Middle” East and Africa at the center implying that the Americas and the “Far” East are nether regions. Neither of these conventions or practices is necessary. Nevertheless, they will persist so long as the prevalent patterns that have emerged from these conventions remain. Consider what would need to be revised if we were to make Jerusalem time the reference.

GMT is successful for many of the reasons that Christianity is. Is there anything necessary about GMT or Christianity? Not that I have seen.

Wait but Why is a site conceived by 3 descendants of Japeth. The following graphics are theirs. The red stars in the one below are mine.

Each of the stars represents one of God’s 3 Messengers. As you can see from the chart, they delivered their Messages at points in time that appear to be in a reverse Fibonacci sequence. The agreed upon years are not Fibonacci numbers but since no one has come up with birth certificates our guess is as good as theirs. If the sequence were to continue, then we could have expected Messengers to appear throughout the Middle Ages until 1596 AD, the year René Descartes was born. Cogito Ergo Sum.

If we consider that René Descartes, who ushered in the Age of Enlightenment, God’s last Messenger, then it all makes sense.

God began conveying his Message at a time when Humans could comprehend it and then stopped when Humans grew up. Meaning – when they understood that they were possessed of a mind that could use deduction (logic, reason) or induction (the scientific method) to exercise good judgment.

That’s as good a tale as any that’s been told on this Subject.

Nobody showed up when we were grunting and swinging from trees. It’s not even an acknowledged state of existence in the scriptures.

Even after we became upright, God didn’t send us anyone for 100s of 1000s of years until the bright pink and blue sliver below.

As the Wait but Why people tell us – we were talking to one another for over 60k years before we figured out writing. Once we did, 2000 years would have to pass before God sent us his first message.

It seems that in the period preceding the first message, we weren’t using the gift too well and so according to the scripture, God wiped out humanity and started fresh with Noah and his three children and their wives.

God’s first message was conveyed to the descendants of one of Noah’s sons, Shem, who, among the 3, confined themselves to the smallest area in what is now known as the Middle East. Versions 2 and 3 followed, again in the Middle East, to Shem’s line in Semitic languages. The rest were left to rape, pillage and plunder.

Versions 2 and 3 received more traction and eventually spread to the descendants of Ham and Japheth in translation.

Some of us can look at this and all the other oddities in the cannon and apocrypha and the incongruity between them and the carbon dated evidence and think – Mysterious Ways.

Those of us who cannot aren’t just being pricks about it. We just can’t believe it.

The patterns aren’t clean. There’s a lot of incongruity. We cannot square it.

And our gut feeling is that it’s aliens.

“Over the past couple months I have dug deep into the science of consciousness and experienced not only peace and serenity like I’ve never known but I also have witnessed the most incredibly profound sightings both in the sky as well as feet away from me. This planet is on a very negative path towards destruction but WE can change that together. If we were to get 1% of the population to meditate and make contact, we would force our governments to acknowledge the truth about extraterrestrial life among us and change our destructive habits destroying our planet.”

  • Reclaiming Sprezzatura

    Reclaiming Sprezzatura

Elizabeth Pearl Nasaw, aka Lyx Ish, aka Elizabeth Was, mail art to John Held Jr., 1987.

Sprezzatura is an Italian word reputed to have first appeared in Castiglione’s book Il Cortigiano in the 16th Century. It signifies an effortless virtuosity and includes marvels that do not betray the effort expended in their execution.

It is today a word traded mostly by fashionistas to denote the quality of looking dapper without trying. Depending on how strictly you construe the appearance of not trying, real world examples of sprezzatura can easily dwindle to extinction.

Most examples of sartorial sprezzatura adduced by those who still use the term are ironically far from it. A quick search online will turn up articles and photos that depict the following sort of thing:

As an aside – you’ll find a lot of cigarette/cigar in bocca in the examples proffered by sprezzatura splainers. This preponderance notwithstanding, smoking has nothing to do with sprezzatura. It’s a vestige of the smoking is cool era perpetuated by people whose deepest thought is the status of the foulard in today’s wardrobe.

The foregoing examples may connote sprezzatura at a buttoned up Karl Lagerfeld convention but just wouldn’t qualify in most other contexts. The number of bracelets and unbuttoned jacket buttons in Exhibit A disqualify that example for breaching the effortlessness requirement. Exhibit B is too pressed. Exhibit G must be disqualified on account of the wristwatch over the cuff; it is overwrought.

To be sure, Gianni Agnelli, the man in Exhibit G, has undeniably exhibited sprezzatura. Consider Exhibit S below:

    Exhibit S

    But not always.

    Exhibit Y

This is not to take away from Gianni Agnelli. The man had style and he wasn’t shy about making unconventional choices. And it is precisely those choices that betrayed the deliberate aforethought that he invested in his look. To achieve sprezzatura in the context of dress one must evoke a nonchalance and ease that cannot be squared with ostensible premeditation.

Just to be clear – sprezzatura does not require that Agnelli or anyone else for that matter give no thought to what they are wearing and accidentally achieve fashion icon status. It must just appear as though it was all pulled together effortlessly. Exhibit Y does not give that impression – it is a studied look.

By the same token, if your personal image is an institution’s investment that is being managed by professionals, then if they achieve the required balance that gives off sprezzatura – they have achieved it. You won’t have it….but you’ll look like you do when they dress you.

Regrettably, the term is today primarily associated with men’s clothing and those who strive for it do so in their attire, often with failed albeit vibrant results. Left in the manicured hands of the faddy it has become a caricature of its essence. What they are bandying about as sprezzatura lacks the subtlety and ingenuity that makes it such a compelling concept and worthy achievement.

Consider – you’re invited to dine at a friend’s house. You enjoy an aperitif, conversation flows, you sit down to eat, delicious food is served, you finish off with a night-cap and return home. Sprezzatura. You arrive, you’re invited to a cocktail and asked to choose the drink and then the liquor and time dilates while the ice is broken off the block and the ingredients are combined and the shaking and what not and while you’re having your drink your host is in and out of the kitchen trying to finish the cooking and then there’s the service and the special wine pairings and the special glasses and the ones for burgundy are dusty and now the reprimands and the dusting etc. Not Sprezzatura.

Sean Spicer salsas with Lindsey Arnold on Dancing with the Stars. One side of that equation exhibited sprezzatura while the other wrangled his weight around the dance floor in a desperate attempt to escape a swarm of invisible murder hornets.

For any art, craft or activity that has its adepts, there is a subset that performs boggling feats with remarkable ease and elegance; think a seventh dan Aikidoka flipping his opponent versus Chris Farley’s flipping a spectator into the trash on Letterman and then somersaulting to his seat. Both are impressive flips. The former, however, impresses in its sprezzatura. The latter is impressive in many other ways but definitely not because of its easy elegance.

Even the inanimate can be appreciated for its sprezzatura. Behind the dial of a mechanical watch there are a myriad minute wheels, levers, gears and springs operating in complex harmony to power and imperceptibly move two simple hands around an axis to mark time. Add to the movement a minute repeater and the sprezzatura quotient skyrockets.

Sprezzatura is our way of making believe that, in this tough miserable world, wondrous marvels flourish with gentle ease. It’s an anodyne for the Human Condition. Train and strive quietly towards excellence and mastery so you can then perform your marvel and inspire others who would have despaired and never tried knowing what it takes.

  • The Art of Becoming Acquainted with Someone

The Art of Becoming Acquainted with Someone

Because it is an art. Increasingly a lost art.

We typically first arrive in people’s lives on tracks laid by our parents, not really aware that we are embarking on journeys in the exploration of other explorers’ worlds. As a result, we learn very little of those worlds, be they revealed or cloistered and end up departing back home with little more than a superficial understanding of the people we’ve encountered.

If on the ride back we’re invited to unpack our impressions, I would venture to say that few of us are taught to search past or follow these loose threads. And as our guides themselves may have never learned to do so, little in the way of context is shared to allow you to understand how the lint you’ve come away with fits within the larger fabric. So it remains lint.

And so it goes on, you with your children. And unless you figure out in advance of procreating how to travel in and out of people’s lives and make meaningful connections, your spawn will just go about collecting lint with you unless one of them breaks the cycle.

With the pace of life continuously accelerating, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult for one to figure it out and break the cycle. My generation flew in and out of relationships. I now see my son teleporting from one to the other and I can hardly imagine the kinds of relationships his kids will have.

A friend of mine and I were spending a month in Siena long, long ago in a galaxy far away. He had spent a semester there during college and knew some locals. The Palio was a week away and so we were both invited by a friend of his to his Contrada‘s dinner. I was also invited by his friend, separately, to have a coffee a day or so before the dinner.

The point of this gesture was for us to get to know each other a bit before the dinner to make me feel more comfortable and to get all the basic-first-time-meeting stuff out of the way so that we wouldn’t have to waste time on it en groupe. To me, that was some evolved shit.

Sure today you can google someone but that’s not the point. It’s not about knowing things about the other person. It’s about connecting with that person or at least making the effort.

Now to truly connect with another person, both people have to be heard by the other and accepted without judgment. To get to that point each has to get a sense of the other person’s moral character and generosity of spirit. This sometimes happens with an uncanny immediacy, through a shared experience or the passage of time. In all cases you always run the risk of being disappointed.

And that’s why you need to cultivate the art of becoming acquainted – to make having gotten to that point worthwhile.

NB – it’s the art and not the decor of making someone’s acquaintance. I just spent an evening in the company of people caught up in the decor, it’s unpleasant. The condicio sine qua non of a meaningful connection is authenticity. It must spring from a true desire to love, not be loved….that’s the outcome.

  • Living with Purpose

    Living with Purpose

    Gracias Laughing Squid

So if you are at a point in your life when your existential questions are increasingly spending time with nihilism, you may worry, slippery slope and all, that anhedonia is around the corner.

To make sure that you do not slip down that slope, you may want to anchor yourself to some purposes or objectives. Goals. Don’t bother with a single metaphysically illuminating supernova. Remember, you are where you are because those just didn’t pan out.

Consider, for example, making improvements in your mobility. We exist, for better or for worse, in a body that moves us through the world. Increasingly, there are people who are developing or following exercise routines that focus on improving the control you have over your body’s motion and increasing the ways in which you can smoothly move your body. The West’s take on Tai Chi basically.

As an aside – this should become the focus of compulsory schooling’s PE class.

Throw several more of these “improvements” on a list, work towards them, strike off ones that aren’t really getting any traction and replace with new ones.

Do these goals all have to be improvements? And what makes something an improvement? Your skeptical mind is why you are where you are in the first place and so it is only natural that these questions will follow.

Increasing your ability to metabolize alcohol by drinking more on a regular basis for example is in some respects an improvement. You ponder – What makes liver cirrhosis different from Muay Thai shin “conditioning”? You answer – the former shortens life while the latter doesn’t. You rebut – you assume a longer life has more value than a shorter one. You question – would I rather live in a drunken stupor for 40 years than live sober for 80 working on my mobility?

    No problem. You do you.

But take heed – The more you dabble in nihilism, the more likely it is that you will degenerate into a full blown imbecile.

When you dedicate brain power for nihilistic projects, the neurons involved begin wiring together into structures that create unhinged and meaningless work. If enough of this happens – you go full retard.

As we all know from Tropic Thunder – Never Go Full Retard

Coming off a personally satisfying project in which he replaced the tires on his bicycle with running shoes, The Q, who is apparently an engineer, decided to replace his bicycle tires again when winter came and neighboring surfaces froze with ice.

This time, he chose circular saw blades. That’s right. The video at top shows you the efforts he expended to remove the hubs from his existing wheels and install them on two large circular saw blades. He then fits his bike with his newly produced saw wheels and records himself trying to propel himself forward on a frozen lake.

When your brain has become overrun with neurological connections that have been firing to create useless garbage – living in nihilism – there’s little left to make you think

    • just buy a set of hubs with brake discs and keep your wheels intact because you’re going to need them
    • rotating a circular saw is what makes it, well, saw

And, as expected, with the 70-80 kg downward force his body is putting on the circular saw as his legs turn the pedals, his new wheel saws into the ice. This sends him back to the drawing board.

His engineering background wakes up from its slumber to have him cut the tips off the saw’s teeth and weld them sideways creating what is effectively a gear or a rigid continuous track like you see fitted on tanks and dozers. He then rides off on the ice pleased with himself.

In an age overpopulated with digital content creators, one expects dross in the deluge of output. That’s not what we are witnessing with The Q. The Q has millions of subscribers and almost as many clips featuring innovations similar to the ones described above; all made with enthusiastic intentionality.

The Q is a purveyor of shameless nihilistic creation. And in case you needed more evidence – his logo is in comic sans.

Take heed. If you were not born an imbecile, be grateful and fend off imbecility by living with meaningful purpose. Cultivate discernment. The options are myriad. There’s no excuse.

  • Nail as Tool

    Nail as Tool

Yesterday I read in Newsweek that faced with a new COVID-19 outbreak Beijing is now using anal swabs to test for COVID-19. Because it’s more accurate….also the reason rectal thermometers are not a curious relic of the past.

Today I am writing to implore my fellow humans to consider lowering the bar. Satisfy yourselves with sufficiently accurate. Don’t get too caught up in accuracy for accuracy’s sake…as an end in itself.

Sure there are certain areas in which we need greater accuracy than is today possible. By all means, keep innovating until we are sufficiently accurate. And I acknowledge that “sufficiently accurate” is a standard that will change over time requiring further innovation.

And while I’m setting a standard, I may as well create a rule – “when it comes to the anus, please consider other options and use as a last resort”.

Which leads me to another misplaced obsession with exceeding limits – the modification of body parts to use them as tools.

One of the more nauseating examples being the nail manicured as tool. To be sure, it’s a sliding scale. One end features guitarists with moderate nail growth triangulated for picking strings and possibly this Japanese nail weaving business. Come on Japan, you’re better than this.

At the other, there’s the stomach churning extended pinky nail with which we are all** familiar, cultivated for use as a coke spoon, pick, screw driver, eye-gouger….I’m sure buckets of creative juices have been secreted developing obscure uses for this grotesque overgrowth of keratin.

** By the way, if you have never seen this please write me. I am interested to learn how you’ve managed to remain blissfully unaware.

In a bizarre twist, this utilitarian phenomenon has evolved in some cultures to signify the complete opposite: non-use. Yes. When spotted, a clean inch (or more) of keratin extending from your pinky finger tells the world that you are of a class that need not get their hands dirty. Clearly this is a case of relativity.

Disregarding the set who aim to elevate themselves in your eyes by maintaining a long nail, I imagine the justification for this phenomenon among the rest is that it is handy. Always there whenever you need it. In other words, efficient.

No need to go looking for a bastoncillo (lovely Spanish word for q-tip) or screw-driver or other thing that does not grow out from your body to execute tasks, no, you can hold in your other three fingers and get to work. Immediately.

So in the interest of keeping us on an evolutionary trajectory, I would like to introduce a new standard in this domain – sufficiently efficient. And to this standard I would like to add some rules:

    1. If a tool exists, then the task that it was created for should under no circumstances be performed with a body part.
    2. If the task you need to perform does not have a tool created for it, and you’ve really searched, then find the tool that most closely fits your purpose and use it.
    3. If you’ve followed Rule 2 and the tool just isn’t cutting it, then make one or have one made.
    4. If you’re sufficiently concerned about being caught without your tool, and are thinking of growing out your nails then introduce yourself to EDC and find something that works for your requirement.
    5. If Rule 4 does not solve your problem then the task you are performing does not need to be done with “reasonably” sufficient urgency and you can go back to Rule 1.

And remember, when you prioritize the right things, your life will become more meaningful.

  • Cookie Monster’s Attack on God

    Cookie Monster’s Attack on God

A rock recently found in Brazil has generated a lot of interest after it was split in half to reveal that it is an ancient homunculus of Jim Henson’s 1960’s recreation.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.”

    Ecclesiastes 1:12

Offers of purchase upwards of $10,000 have already been made to the present owner which will indubitably make for wonderful meal-time conversation with relatives debating theories of economic value.

But what if I told you, cher collector, that Cookie Monster can be found just about anywhere?

Or more precisely, that Cookie Monster sightings in nature and the worlds we inhabit are not so uncommon.

Would you still exchange the agate quartz cross-section for $10,000?

Or, would you review your list of examples supporting the teleological argument for the existence of God? The one that posits that the order in the universe implies a creator…a designer. The watchmaker analogy?

Maybe what appears to be “designed” in nature is nothing more than our projection, onto nature, of the designs with which we are familiar?

Now if you think the universe and the scant life inhabiting it are a mess that has either accreted over time by chance or been cobbled together by a dilettante, then the fact that we keep creating meaning and value from pattern detection that is of questionable utility, Cookie Monster everywhere, should

    • further assure you of your position; or
    • leave you wondering whether your seeing the world this way is itself a projection that is not revelative of any truth but a function of your wiring.

In other words…stuck in a paradox.

  • The Quantum Universe is Probabilities

    The Quantum Universe is Probabilities

….until it is observed by a consciousness that fixes it to one potential state.

This is what science has been telling us, coming up on a century now, is happening at the quantum level where particles carry superpositions (e.g. existing in two different places at the same “time”) that are eliminated yielding a single position only upon observation.

The conclusion drawn from the foregoing is that reality is only “determined” upon observation – or put differently, doesn’t really exist independent of the observer.

That conclusion is belied by our experience of reality. We do not think that someone who is asleep alone in a cave somewhere exists in two or more different ways that are only fixed/determined at the moment when the first member of the rescue team walks in and “observes” that person.

But that’s not what the science is saying.

We experience the world at a macro level relatively speaking. People are not particles. They are made up of a myriad particles. What’s more, those particles are constantly changing. And yet, we interact with and ultimately bury and mourn one distinct person when that bundle of particles ceases to operate in a biologically active way.

We call the Sun the Sun even though its constituent “elements”, quite literally, at the particle level are dynamic and nobody is freaking out about that.

And yet our school systems are still not dealing with this in any meaningful way to allow the concept to gain adequate penetration and yield offshoot thinking that provides either more substantiation or attenuation and more importantly to allow the implications to gestate.

    It’s all still considered controversial.

So every week someone puts out an article on this as though they for the first time just uncovered a secret tablet of ancient (potentially alien) knowledge and are sharing it with their readers with the same hold on to your seat undertone.
