The Russian contribution to the election of Señor Drumpf and the bright signs of collusion with his campaign cemented early on the majority’s perspective on the illegitimacy of his administration.
Add to this his amorality and opportunism, the baleful stench emanating from his deficient entourage, the brazen lies cascading from him and his spokespeople, his deranged reaction to the investigation into foreign meddling in the election including overt acts of obstruction into said investigation and that cement was reinforced, tanked and sealed.
I was never among those who believed that Drumpf was a master dealmaker, strategist, businessman, developer or any other moniker save one – swindler. Very soon after he appeared on my radar in the early 90s, my impression of him was that, like many unloved offspring who inherit significant wealth, he squandered more of it than he generated. Seeing how he operated in New York and Atlantic City and learning a bit about his real-estate portfolio I further surmised that whatever gains he did make were begotten by gaming the system.
What I did not know about him, until watching him perform as POTUS, was how tragically incompetent he was. I was also surprised by the virulence of his narcissism – I had always thought it was more of an act – and the extent to which it impacts his judgment and decision making.
All these traits and the actions associated with them make it a mystery, unsolved as of yet, how he has not completely destroyed himself. This says more about the state of humanity, among whom he is thriving, than it does about him and that is my point here. Drumpf is a red herring.

His antics focus the spotlight on him. His impunity leaves those of us who find his antics dangerous and malignant in a state of existential despair. Or maybe that’s just me projecting. Let’s just say he elicits a strong adversarial reaction that his smug indifference turns into apoplectic rage. Still only me?
Regardless, the energy that is being expended on Trump by the resistance is entirely misdirected. Mueller’s testimony confirmed this. There was no sensational eruption of high crimes and misdemeanors culminating in treason. There was unwarranted judicious restraint and what we had come to learn without Mueller’s testimony – that Trump is an immoral fool who conducted his campaign the way an immoral fool would.
Trump, we must realize, is the accidental nexus of several lines of battle that have been simmering for some time. He did not draw those lines, expand them or deepen them. Shocked by his impunity, we give him too much credit.
While certain conditions and people are harrowing those lines in plain site, we are distractedly expending our finite focus on destroying Drumpf. As an easy target, he’s easy to focus on but he has proven resilient…if not downright antifragile. And more importantly for our cost-benefit calculus, he has proven ineffectual. It’s time to focus our attention on those people who are hiding in the shadows outside of Trump’s spotlight who have either been emboldened by the reception some of his ideas are receiving or are using him as cover for their own nefarious ends.
It’s not Russia that entered America’s halls of power through Trump, it’s these depraved miscreants.

The resistance should be working on isolating and undermining these characters (McConnell, Graham, Jordan, Meadows, Nunes, etc.) and leave Trump to his clown show.
